Choosing a fabric for Solar Shades can be confusing. But if you follow a few simple guidelines, the decisions become easy. If you take a look at the photo below you will see two rows of the same windows using different fabrics.

I have discussed many times the insulation properties of window coverings in previous posts. Such products as cellular shades offer very high R Values. In my session, An Architect’s Guide to Sustainable Window Coverings, I also address the role of drapery and roman shades.

While Solar Shades play a key role in daylighting concerns with LEED, the USGBC does not address fabric content, glare control performance, the differences in the openess of the various weaves available or the color choices of the fabrics.

We recently installed Grommet Panels with Roman Shades at a residence for the designer Satomi Yoshida-Katz. The Flat Roman Shades only cover the lower windows leaving the transem uncovered. We used short rods on either end with Grommet Panels.

Cleveland Clinic’s Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas is an architectural marvel. I recently visited the building while I was at the World Market Center for the Furniture Market and The Interior Design Society’s Annual Conference.

I was recently in the Metropolitan Museum of Art measuring for some shades in their new facility. This area houses one of the largest collections of art reference books, which is available to be checked out as it is a public library. 

We recently completed a project that required great thought and planning. The architect asked us to figure out how to install both a roman shade, a solar shade in a series of windows that included a curved glass in the corner. The roman shade and the solar shade needed to fit into a 8″ pocket and
