Selecting fabric for drapery design is an interesting and a creative process. For commercial design, it requires an understanding of the function and the design of the drapery treatment to determine which type of fabric is suitable. For residential design, sometimes the fabric is selected first even before function and design are considered. It is important for the Architect or Designer to better understand the various considerations in the selection process.
Let’s assume we will decide upon function and form before we make fabric selections. There are many preliminary questions to ask.
Here are a few:
- What fabric hand will work with the treatment design?
- What is the pattern repeat?
- What if the fabric width?
- What is the fabric content?
- Does the fabric need to be lined?
These are just some of the questions you will need to answer before the fabric can be selected.
