50 Exterior Motorized Roller Shades in 4 Days
Wow, what an experience! Who knew installing 50 motorized exterior roller shades on 4 floors in 4 days could be so challenging; well now we know. Last week we had the privilege of working with Columbia Prep School on the Upper West Side in New York City. Columbia Prep School has an unique story of its own, founded in 1764, it is the oldest private school in the country; truly incredible and something to brag about.
Columbia Prep School called us to help solve their unique problem of protecting their stairwells from the outdoor environments (as you can see from the picture above). Luckily we had just the product to solve this particular and functional issue, but wow was it a challenge! Not only is it always interesting to deal with high windows and steel structures, here we had we had to deal with the outdoor weath environment as well as looking straight down 4 floors. On the first day we experienced quite the storm, it thundered and lightning and rained buckets on us for hours; all while we were strategically balancing on ladders. Luckily for us the weather cleared up and we were able to complete the install in four eight-hour days. As you know, exterior shades will always be more challenging than hanging your standard roller shades because of the additional exterior components, and of course dealing with the environmental unknowns.
Know matter how well we planned ahead for this install, the unforseen challenge we found with hanging the exterior shades was the need to drill straight into solid steel beams. Now this feat is usually not something we deal with, as many of our jobs are within the window and are usually wood or thin metal casing. After snapping numerous drill bits and not looking down, we turned that open corridor into a unique and well protected outdoor space that will protect and maintain the area for years to come.
