Window Coverings are not just decorations – they are a complete system just as important as the building’s lighting, heating, and air conditioning.
The sun’s energy is both helpful and detri-mental to the building itself and to its oc-cupants. Effective solar control is often over-looked in the planning and design phase of construction. Many attractive and otherwise well designed buildings suffer from this pitfall. Occupants are subjected to stressful glare and heat, while the owners are saddled with a large and unexpected energy bill.
When energy was cheap it was easy to ignore this problem – window coverings were just decorations used to block unwanted glare. At worst, the only thing effected was the view.
Using the sun as a source of natural day lighting and heating was never considered a priority. The occupants and their comfort was usually an after thought in the mind’s of the designers and owners.
This of course has changed. Effective use of the sun’s energy has become a necessity in the design of buildings that are both pleasing to look at, comfortable to be in, and less expensive to own.
Window coverings that are well thought out can pay for themselves by saving energy year round. Best of all, they can still be decorations.

COMPLETE SYSTEM DESIGN
Planning for window coverings should start well before the concept is ever put to paper. This is where the partnership between the InSync Designer and the Architect begins. We look at the entire building system—not just the window coverings.
The structural elements in and around the windows always needs to be considered during the planning phase. Is there enough room for the hardware and associated devices? How will they be attached to the structure? Will you need solar shading as well as room darkening for visual presentations? Does the selection of shade cloth help or hurt the end result?
If the owner wants the comfort, convenience, and savings from a motorized shading system, has the electrical and control sys-tem been taken into account? We often are asked to look at projects that have been started and failed because noth-ing was thought through.
For the Owner, Architect and General Contractor this can be expensive and time consuming to fix. The InSync Designer lays out a comprehensive window treatment plan — start to finish — we take out the guesswork.
