LEED Guide for Light Shelves

Benefits to Earning LEED Certification:

  1. Lower operating costs and increased asset value Reduce waste sent to landfills
  2. Conserve energy and water Healthier and safer for occupants
  3. Reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions
  4. Qualify for tax rebates, zoning allowances and other incentives in numerous cities
  5. Demonstrate an owner’s commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility

USGBC‐ United States Green Building Council is a non‐profit community of leaders dedicated to making green buildings available to everyone within a generation.

LEED

encourages global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices through the creation and implementation of universally understood and accepted tools and performance criteria.

LEED’s Green Building Rating System

is a third party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED certification provides independent third party verification that a building project meets the highest green building and performance measures. Certified green buildings receive a plaque that authenticates the building is environmentally responsible, profitable and a healthy place to live and work. State and local governments across the country are adopting LEED for public‐owned and public‐funded buildings. Architects, construction managers, engineer and interior designers are among many who use LEED to help transform our environment. The four levels of certification, Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum are determined by the total number of points a project earns in a wide range of categories.

LEED Rating Systems point programs are available for the following criteria:

New Construction Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance Commercial Interiors

Schools Retail Healthcare Homes Neighborhood Development

Core and Shell (to implement sustainable design for new core and shell construction)

How Light Shelves can contribute to LEED Rating Systems Points:

Based on the most current version for LEED for New Construction version 2.2, AGS, Inc. can contribute points to your project in the following categories:

Category Description LEED Requirements Points Products Energy and Atmosphere

Energy & Atmosphere Credit 1. Optimizing Energy Performance ‐Achieve increasing levels of energy performance above the prerequisite standard to reduce environmental impact associated with excessive energy use

Demonstrate a percentage improvement in the proposed building performance rating compared to the baseline building performance rating per ASHRAE/IESNA (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating & Air Conditioning Engineers/ Illuminating Engineering Society of North America) Standard 90.1‐2004 by a whole building project simulation using the Building Performance Rating Method of that standard.

Materials and Resources

Materials & Resources Credit 4.1 Recycled Content (Specify 10%) – Increase demand for building products that incorporate recycled content materials thereby reducing impacts resulting from extraction and processing of virgin materials

Use materials recycled content such that the sum of the pre‐consumer and post‐consumer recycled content constitutes at least 10% of the total value of the materials in the project

Materials & Resources Credit 5.1 Regional Materials: 10% Extracted Processed & Manufactured Regionally – Increase demand for building materials and products that are extracted and manufactured within the region thereby supporting the regional economy and reducing the environmental impact resulting from transportation

Use building materials or products that have been extracted, harvested or recovered, as well as manufactured within 500 miles of the project site for a minimum of 10% of the total material value. If only a fraction of a product or material is extracted, harvested or recovered and manufactured locally, than only that percentage shall contribute to the regional value.

Indoor Environmental Air Quality

Indoor Environmental Quality Credit 8.1 Daylight and Views (Daylight 75% of Spaces) – Provide for the building occupants with a connection between indoor spaces and the outdoors through the introduction of daylight and views into the regularly occupied areas of the building

Achieve a minimum glazing factor of 2% in a minimum of 75% of all regularly occupied spaces. Provide daylight redirection and/or glare control devices to avoid high contrast situations that could impede visual tasks.
